3 Tips For Keeping Your Garage Door Looking And Running Great

Posted on: 25 June 2017

Garage doors can often last for years, but this is only if you take good care of them. Otherwise, they will fail prematurely and require constant repairs. You need to treat your garage door as you would any other home appliance. Routine maintenance will help improve the reliability and extend the lifespan of your garage door. With that being said, here are a few things you can do on your own without the help of a garage door repair professional:

Tip #1: Give Your Garage Door a Good Cleaning.

Depending on the location of your garage, the garage door may be one of the first things that guests see when they arrive at your home. Therefore, you will want to make sure that it remains visually-appealing. Even if guests don't see it often, you don't want it looking terrible. Over time, dirt, grime, and grease will build up on it, which can cause the paint to peel away. Luckily, it's easy to give your garage door a good cleaning. All it takes is warm water and a gentle household detergent, like dish soap. Don't forget to give the interior of your garage door a good scrubbing, too, but you will want to make sure to avoid getting the soapy away on the tracks and hinges.

Tip #2: Lubricate All Hardware and Tracks.

An easy way to ensure that your garage door is always running as smoothly as possible is to regularly lubricate its hardware and tracks. By lubricating the hardware and tracks, you will help to eliminate those loud screeches and other noises that your garage door makes sometimes when it opens and closes.  There are special lubricants that are made specifically for garage doors. Keep in mind that when applying this lubricant that a little bit goes a long way and that over-lubricating can actually do more harm than good since it can attract dust and clump up.

Tip #3: Perform an Inspection on the Weather Stripping.

At the bottom of your garage door, there is a very important piece of weather stripping that keeps the heat and cold out, depending on the season. Take the time to inspect this weather stripping and see if it is beginning to come off. Is it crumbling, fraying, cracking, etc.? If it is damaged in any way, then it's time to replace it.

If you detect any damage to your garage door and/or its hardware during your routine maintenance that you are unable to fix on your own, contact an expert.
