How To Install A Garage Door Opener

Posted on: 5 May 2015

A properly installed garage door opener can make your garage a much more accessible and attractive part of your home.  Hiring someone to perform an installation can be costly. This guide will help you to install your own garage door opener.

Step 1: Ensuring Safety

Nothing is more important than your safety during this project.  First, make sure that the door opens and closes properly, any locking mechanisms are disengaged and the applicable power sources are turned off.  It is also important not to wear loose clothing when working on a project of this nature as loose clothing can become caught in moving parts and lead to injury.

Step 2: Completing the Installation

The best place to start in any project is to familiarize yourself with the product.  Reading the owners manual is the best way to do this.  After you have familiarized yourself with the various pieces of the garage door opener, separate out the pieces so they are easy to access.  First you will want to connect the tube, the part which acts as a guide to the traveler and the idler, to the power unit.  After the power is connected to the tube, you will install the traveler into its position over the tube.  This will be done prior to completing assembly of the idler.  After the tube, power and traveler are in position, you will attach the chain to the traveler.  This is done prior to wrapping it into the power unit.  It is vital that you ensure the chain is attached with the proper tension.  If the tension is incorrect, your door will not function properly.

Next you will want to set the head bracket in place and connect the applicable pieces.  A common mistake made during the assembly of a garage door opener is failing to ensure proper clearance for the power unit.  After ensuring that there is proper space for the power unit, fix it in place using a 2x4-inch lumber and mounting strap.

Step 3: Testing the Opener

Prior to finishing the assembly, it is important to test the system to ensure that it functions smoothly.  The majority of systems require one inch of space between the door and the tube.  Keep this in mind during the installation.  Attach the bracket to the traveler, making certain not to damage any wires while connecting them to the power unit.  After the connection is finished, turn the power back on and test your opener.  It should function smoothly and quietly.  For added safety, it is advisable to use a motion detector.

Your garage door opener should now be operable. With proper maintenance, you should be able to enjoy years of service. For more information, contact a company like Calgary Overhead Doors.
